Activity 3 - The Nature of Sound
Wave on a String Simulation
- Measure frequency, amplitude, and wavelength.
1. Using an oscilloscope, electronic keyboard, and piano, Bill Nye shows what the waves look like for sounds of varying pitches. He also explains how notes and rhythm play a role in forming what we define as music.
2. Illustrates the journey of radio waves traveling through the universe. As the waves continue their journey deeper into space, the soundtrack gets older and quieter. Along the journey, the waves pass by celestial objects such as planets, stars, and nebulae.
3. Destiny introduces Dory to her neighbor, Bailey, a beluga whale who claims to have lost his ability to find objects using sound waves. Bailey believes that his head is swollen, but Destiny states that his head is naturally that big because of his species.
